Siem reap is an excellent place to buy Cambodia Souvenirs, silks, handicraffs, textitles and contemporary art. Only Phnom Penh offers a comparable selection. In addition to the traditional markets, there has been an explosion of new shops, tourist market, galleris and boutiques over the last few of years, offering a varied selection of quality handicrafts and silks as well as original artistic creations in variety of media.
'Phsar' means 'market' in Khmer. The tranditional phsar is a sprawing, covered, open-air affair with vendors selling from stalls, mats, and small shops. A visit to a traditional markets, located in the heart of the city, catering to visitors as well as locals these days, offering a huge selection of souvenirs under one roof - handicraffs and curios, tranditional silverwork, silk, baskets, statuary, carvings, tranditional musical instruments and more.
Individual little boutiques, handicraft shops, art and photo galleries are scattered across the town, though there is a concentration of places in the Old Market area. The boutiques tend to offer higher quality, more unique and sophisticated selections of items than the markets - some focusing on Cambodian silks and tailoring, others on high quality handicrafts, NGO-based crafts, Asian-inspired photographic and artistic creations or specialty items, such as local candles, spices and teas. Perhaps most interesting a new genertion of Cambodia artists is making its mark and contemporary Cambodia art is coming to the fore.
