Phnom Penh Capital City


Phom Penh is the capital of Cambodia and is laid out north to south along the confluence of the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers. Phnom Penh is home to a population of about 2.5 million, and is a vibrant, bustling and ethnically diverse city with a mixed population of Khmer, Chinese and Vietnames, The French left a legacy of crumbling colonial architecture, some of which has been tasterfully renovated. sidewalk restaurants have sprung up all over town, especially around the recently developed riverfront area. There is also a more spirtual side to Phnom Penh with a large number of Wats (temples), and you can often see monks is saffron robes padding along the streets seeking alms.
Phsar Thom Thmei
The Central Market, build in 1935-37, is one of Phnom Penh's main landmarks. It has by far the largest range of products on sale. The market goes by a number of names: The Khmer name is P'sah T'mai, meaning New Market. It is also Know as the Central Market on account of its location.
The yellow, art deco edifice rises above the surrounding streets and is hard to miss. It has a domed central hall and four large extensions filled with small booths. Everything from gold and jewelry to electronic goods and souvenirs are pn sale. As with all markets in Cambodia, bargaining is expected and can reduce prices by 20%. Outside the market are stands selling fresh fruit, meat, vegetables, flowers, fish and cooked foods. It is a good place to pick up a moto taxi or a city bus.
Old Market
The Old Market on St. 110 lives up to its name, It has seen better days and is rather dowdy place that sells household items, clothes, food and jewelry. There are a local restaurants and food vendors scattered throughout the area.
Toul Tompong Market
Known as the Russian Market, it is located at the corner of St.440 and St.163, south of Mao Tse Tung Blvd. It is the best place in town for souvenir shopping. Toul Tompong Market has various things for sale, including miniature Buddhas, silk, silver, jewelry, games, videos and CDs. It is well worth a visit just to browse. There are also numerous small cafes nearby selling the full array of Khmer street food.
Olympic Market
Like many of Phnom Penh's markets, the Olympic Market is primarily local. The market is located near the Olympic Stadium and Wat Moha Montrei Items for sale include bicycle parts, clothes, electrical goods and food. The Olympic Market is the most modern of Phnom Penh's markets.
Soriya Shopping Centre
Located near the Central Market. There are many floors and the goods on sale range from designer clothing and shoes to flatscreen TVs and up-to-date digital cameras. There are also several restaurants adn cafes and a mult-story car-park. Soriya used to boast the only set of escalators in Cambodia. These remain a local attraction.
Night Market
Located between Street 106 and Street 108 near sisowath Quay, the night market is a popular meeting place for locals because it often hosts small concerts and product promotions. There are numberous stalls selling clothes and household decorations as well as souvenirs, carvings and silks. Prices for foreigners can be high so be prepared to haggle. The market is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings but is closed for the rest of the week.

The Term ' Wat ' means ' temple' in English. The same tern is used in Thailand. The wat plays an integral part in the everyday lives of Cambodian Buddhists. Phnom Penh has many temples including some of the finest 'Wats' in the country.
Wat Phnom ( Hill Temple )
Wat Phnom is the symbol of the capital and the place from which Phnom Penh derives its name. The Khmer word 'Phnom Penh ' means 'hill' in English so Phnom Penh literally translates as 'Penh Hill' . It is the only hill in Phnom Penh and is located in the north-east of the city between the Boeng Kak Lake and the Tonle Sap River.
According to legend, the first temple on this site was erected in 1373 to house four statues of the Buddha, deposited by the waters of the Mekong and discoversed by a woman named Penh.
There is a busy little park around the slopes of the hill that hosts an array of street sellers catering to the needs of tourists, and to the constant stream of local pilgrims trekking to see the hill's Vihara, shrines and fortune-tellers.
West of the Vihara is an enormouse stupa containing the ashe of King Ponhea Yat who reigned from 1405-1467.
Wat Botum: This wat is situated just northwest of the intersection of Sotheros and Sihanouk Boulevards, and is significant because it is one of the city's original Wats. It was founded in 1422 by King Ponhea Yat.
Wat Lang Ka: Situated on Preah Sihanouk Blvd, near the Indepaendance Monument.
Wat Koh: The oldest Pagoda in Phnom Penh. Located on Monivong Blvd between St.174 and St.178.
Wat Moha Montrei: Situated on the southern side of Preah sihanouk Blvd, Between St.163 and St. 173 in the block east of Phsar Olympic ( Olympic Market )
Wat Unalom: A monastery for tourists who want to find out more about Buddhism. This wat is on the riverfront about 250m north of the National museum, and across the road from the Phnom Penh Tourist Information Center. Behind the main building is a stupa containing an eyebrow hari of the Lord Buddha.
Chroy Changvar Bridge
The Cambodia Japan Friendship Bridge was first constructed in 1966, and had a design very different from the one that stands today. It was twice mined and destroyed by the Khmer Rouge forces in the 1973-1975 war.
Reconstruction work finally began on the bridge in 1995 thanks to a generous donation from the Japanese goverment. Japan also provided skilled industrail engineers and labor to assist with, and oversee the completion of the project.
Independence Monument
The monument was built in 1985 to symbolize the independence Cambodia gained from France in 1953. The French had ruled Indochina for over a century but the region following defeat at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam in May 1954.
King Sihanouke, the most influential figure in 20th Century Khmer politiecs, was instrumental in engineering Cambodia's independence and is still revered for this achievement.
Independance 9th. The monument is build in a distinctive Khmer style and doubles as a memorial to former Cambodia patriots.
Royal Palace and Silver Temple
The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh is one of the capital's premier tourist attractions. It was designed by the famouse Khmer architect Oknha Tep Nimith Mak and was construted between 1866 and 1870 during the reign of King Norodom.
The Royal Palace is located near Sisowath Quay, on Sothearos Blvd. Opposite the entrance to the palace are the walls Elephant. There are several parts to the Royal Palace, all of which are worth seeing. The Chan Chaya Pavilion is the royal dance hall, used by the king, his relatives and high- ranking officals. Te Vinichhay Temple is the hall where kings are enthroned.
The Royal residence itself is in Khemarin Temple, though this area is obviously off-limits to the public. The Silver Temple ( Wat Preah Keo Morokot ) is magnificant. Located south of the Royal Palace, it draws its name from over 5000 silver blocks weighing near 6tons. In the center of the temple is a statue of Buddha made of Baccarat crystal. In front is a 90Kg golden Buddha Studded with 9,584 diamonds. The walls of the temple are decorated with a stunning series of murals depicting the entire Ramayana story.
Open 8:00am-11:00am, and 2:00pm-5:00pm, Entry costs $6.25 for foreigners. Please dress modestly for visits to the palace: a strict dress code applies to all visitors.
